Four interdisciplinary training programs continue to support over 15 predoctoral and 512 postdoctoral trainees in the Cardiovascular Center:

• The Cardiovascular Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship (HL 07121), under the direction of Dr. Francois Abboud, has been in existence since 1975, and has received a total of $9.7 million in support (direct and indirect costs). The program has trained over 300 postdoctoral scientists who now have academic and clinical positions around the nation in the cardiovascular field.

• The Pulmonary Training Program (HL 07638), under the direction of Dr. Gary Hunninghake, has been in existence since 1986 and provides funding for 3 predoctoral and 10 postdoctoral scientists. Support for the fifteen-year period totals $5.5 million (direct and indirect costs). This postdoctoral program provides training to both M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s who are interested in lung disease and who plan to pursue independent research careers in universities, research institutes or schools of medicine. The primary activity of the postdoctoral trainees is research related lung disease.

• The Training Program in Hemostasis and Thrombosis (HL 07344), under the direction of Dr. C. Patrick Burns, began in 1978 and has received a total of $4.6 million in support (direct and indirect costs) through 2003 to support a total of 143 postdoctoral scientists. This program has as its focal point the training of postgraduate physicians in hemostasis and thrombosis for positions in academic institutions.
