O'BRIEN KIDNEY RESEARCH CENTER (DK52617)
This O'Brien Kidney Research Center, under the direction of Dr. John Stokes, Professor of Internal Medicine, examines the important factors determining the structure and regulation of the molecular complex in order to gain insight into how abnormalities in its regulation might contribute to NaCl-sensitive hypertension. The research team consists of ten investigators from four different departments. Funding for the five year period 2003-2008 is $5.11 million (direct and indirect costs).
CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (CFFRDP)
Currently in the 13th year of a 15-year grant period, this RDP is under the direction of Dr. Michael Welsh, Professor of Internal Medicine and Physiology, and supports 1- to 2-year pilot and feasibility projects related to cystic fibrosis. Five investigators from 3 departments participate in this program. Funding for this RDP for the period 1988-2004 totals $5 million (direct costs only).
GENE THERAPY VECTOR CORE
The Gene Therapy Vector Core, directed by Beverly Davidson, Ph.D., provides access to reagents required for gene transfer including retroviral, adenoviral, and adeno-associated viral vectors and non-viral gene delivery systems, including cationic lipid and receptor-mediated gene transfer systems. The core also provides an important training environment. This includes training for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students as well as faculty. By training investigators in the construction and use of gene transfer and vectors, the Vector Core allows trainees and faculty to develop new approaches to therapy and to create new models that will allow a better understanding of the pathogenesis of disease. |
