The UI College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and Iowa City VA Health Care System are located in close proximity to one another on the main university campus which straddles the Iowa River. The UI Hospitals and Clinics is the tertiary health care center for the state of Iowa and much of the surrounding region. It is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the country and is consistently cited as one of America's best health care facilities.
The Iowa City VA Health Care System is immediately adjacent and is fully integrated into the clinical, training, and research programs of the University. The Department of Internal Medicine, with about 175 full-time faculty in 11 divisions, is a young, vigorous, and growing department, that has been nationally recognized for academic excellence for many years.
