Department of Internal Medicine - Fellowship Training in Infectious Diseases

Life in Iowa City

The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine offers comprehensive training in clinical care and research in infectious diseases. This brochure highlights the training program, division staff, and the institution.

The UI College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and Iowa City VA Medical Center are located in close proximity to one another on the main university campus which straddles the Iowa River. Iowa City, a town of some 60,000 people of remarkably varied backgrounds and interests, offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere highlighted by a wealth of opportunities for cultural, intellectual, and recreational activities. In short, Iowa Citians enjoy a rewarding life style with most of the advantages but few of the aggravations of large urban centers.

The UI Hospitals and Clinics is the tertiary health care center for the state of Iowa and much of the surrounding region. It is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the country and is consistently cited as one of America's best health care facilities.

The Iowa City VA Medical Center is immediately adjacent and is fully integrated into the clinical, training, and research programs of the University. The Department of Internal Medicine, with about 175 full-time faculty in 11 divisions, is a young, vigorous, and growing department, that has been nationally recognized for academic excellence for many years.
