Department of Internal Medicine - Fellowship Training in Infectious Diseases

Clinical Activities

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at the University of Iowa is ACGME accredited for two years, at the end of which the fellow will meet ABIM eligibility requirements. However, a third year is optional for fellows interested in an academic career. This optional third year is strongly encouraged for those who want to pursue research and would focus on research activity.

Clinical training is concentrated in the first year of the program. During this year, each fellow is required to meet with faculty members in the division of infectious diseases, and some members outside the division, to discuss the faculty's research activities. The fellow then selects a faculty member, who will then guide his/her research activity and development during the second and subsequent years.

Clinical Rotations occur at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and at the Iowa City VA Health Care System, which is located across the street from the UIHC.
