Fellowship Training Program in
Hematology and Medical Oncology
Outline of Fellowship Program Rotations
An “ambulatory block rotation” in the F1 year is constituted of 2-3 clinics per week plus the COC. In the F2 and 3 years the ambulatory block is defined as 1-2 clinics per week plus the COC.
Year 1: months 1 – 12
7 – 10 months of assigned inpatient rotations and consultation services including:
- 2 months on the inpatient Acute Leukemia – Bone Marrow Transplantation unit with the first month preceded by one month of the Hematologic Malignancy ambulatory rotation. Additional months may be requested during year one or later.
- 1 month on the Hematological Malignancy ambulatory rotation at UIHC
- 1-2 month VA hematology-oncology consultation
- 1-2 month UIHC hematology consultation
- 1-2 month UIHC oncology consultation
- 1 month gynecological oncology rotation
Plus,
- block ambulatory months with 2–3 half-day clinics per week with each clinic elective being for 1 or, preferably, a 2-month block of time
- COC as a minimum half-day per week in 6-month blocks
- 1 or 2 months elective time [eg. bone marrow lab, radiation oncology]
Year 2: months 13 – 24
Months 13 – 18 for fellows pursuing 18 months of research:
- 2 months of assigned inpatient rotations including:
- VA Hematology-Oncology inpatient consultation service, and/or
- UIHC Hematology consultation service, and/or
- UIHC Oncology consultation service.
Plus,
- COC in 6-month blocks and
- One – two block ambulatory months made of 1-2 clinics per week or
- 7RC inpatient Leukemia – BMT rotation or
- 4JPE inpatient Hematology-Oncology teaching service or
- Extra-divisional electives.
Months 19 – 24 for fellow pursuing 18 months of research:
- COC and
- Research time
Months 13 – 24 for fellows pursuing 6 months of research:
- 3 months of assigned inpatient rotations including:
- VA Hematology-Oncology inpatient consultation service or
- UIHC Hematology consultation service or
- UIHC Oncology consultation service.
- Research time
- Continued clinical electives
- Block ambulatory elective, 1 – 2 half-day(s) per week outpatient clinics
Year 3
Months 25-36 for fellows pursuing 18 months of research:
- COC and
- Research time
Months 25-36 for fellows pursuing 6 months of research:
- COC and
- 1-2 months of assigned inpatient consultation services
- Research time – 6 months mandatory by completion of fellowship
- Block ambulatory clinic time, 1 – 2 half-day(s) per week outpatient clinics
- Electives within or outside of the division
