Department of Internal Medicine - General Medicine Fellowship Training Program
The Iowa Scholars in
Clinical Investigation Program (K30)
General Internal Medicine fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Research, and to apply as trainees. The Iowa Scholars in Clinical Investigation Program is one of 57 programs awarded the K30 Clinical Research Curriculum Award by the National Institutes of Health to promote the development of junior clinical researchers. Designed to prepare post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty for academic careers, the Program provides outstanding interdisciplinary training in the theories, methods, and applications of clinical research. An on-line application is available here.
The Mentored Research Experience . The most important training experience is selecting and working closely with a veteran clinical research mentor. Through the Mentored Research Experience, trainees learn to plan and conduct research, and to analyze and publish their results. Trainees will author at least two manuscripts a year for submission to a peer-reviewed journal, present their research results at a national conference, and prepare a career development research proposal for the NIH or other relevant agencies.
Other didactic training . Trainees can pursue additional didactic training to obtain a clinical research certificate or one of several degree programs at the University of Iowa. Degree programs emphasizing clinical research include Masters' Degree Programs in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Translational Biomedical Research.
