The Allergy/Immunology Fellowship training program at the University of Iowa offers particular strengths in teaching, research, and outstanding patient care.
The patients seen at the University of Iowa Allergy/Immunology Division cover the full spectrum of allergic and immunologic diseases. The Division places equal emphasis on allergic and immunologic diseases thus ensuring
that our fellows get both the depth and the breadth of clinical experience. In addition, most of our faculty are members of the University of Iowa interdisciplinary immunology graduate program thus ensuring abundant opportunities for involvement in basic, applied or clinical research.
The clinical and basic interests of the Faculty within the Division also cover the full spectrum of allergic and immunologic fields thus ensuring readily available expertise in most areas of the specialty. Our fellowship program is quite flexible tailoring the training to the fellow's ultimate career goal be it in private practice, in the academic Clinician-Educator track or in the academic Physician-Scientist track.
Educational Goals and Objectives:
The mission of this program is to train physicians (board certified/eligible in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics) in the art and science of the specialty of Allergy/Immunology. Our training program follows the guidelines established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Two years are the minimum amount of time required to become board eligible in Allergy/Immunology. The training program encompasses clinical opportunities, research opportunities and scholarly activity. Trainees will receive clinical experience in managing a variety of allergic and immunologic disorders including asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, adverse drug reaction, food allergy, primary immunodeficiency, vasculitides and immunologic lung disease. All trainees will have the opportunity to conduct research: research can be in the form of bench research, clinical trials or chart review. Trainees will have the opportunity to attend several weekly conferences in Allergy, pulmonary medicine, basic immunology and clinical immunology. A major goal of this program is to instill in the trainee a desire for life-long learning, to empower the trainee with the skills for self-directed study and with the tools for critical appraisal of the literature. Upon completion of this training program, the trainee will be able to evaluate a patient with allergic or immune-related problems and will be able to formulate therapeutic plans using state-of-the-art approaches. Moreover, the trainee will be able to critically evaluate the medical literature.
