CAREER PATHS

The Department of Internal Medicine is committed to individualizing and developing the chosen career paths among trainees.  Each resident is given career guidance throughout residency by the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, and faculty mentor(s) of his or her choice.  In addition to semi-annual individual meetings with an Associate Program Director, a designated Associate PD assists residents with securing fellowship training positions.

From 2007-2011, 60% of our graduates pursued fellowship training, obtaining subspecialty fellowship positions in many of the finest programs nationwide (see below). Seventy-one percent of these graduates chose to stay at University of Iowa for their fellowship training, attesting to resident satisfaction with the educational environment, hospital system, and collegiality.  Over the past five years, 36% of graduating residents remained in general internal medicine, taking positions as hospitalists and primary care physicians at University of Iowa and across the country.
