Welcome from our Interim Department Head

This is an extraordinary time in your life, a transition that marks the beginning of a crucial new period in your professional career and in your personal experience. When I went about interviewing for and choosing my residency, I was a bit anxious but mostly very excited. I knew it would be hard work, but I looked forward to the challenge as I am sure you do now.

I sincerely believe that you stand at the beginning of one of the most exciting times in the history of medicine. After decades of research in human disease we have begun to see a novel array of new therapies that will rapidly expand in the near future. The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa has contributed in countless ways to this new world of discovery, remedy, and hope. As chair, my goal is ensure that we remain in the forefront not just of change but of important science, meaningful education, and the best patient care available anywhere -- all of this in a stimulating environment of cultural and intellectual diversity.

Among my highest priorities is to see that our residency program continues in its position as one of the premier programs in the nation. Dr. Scott Vogelgesang has led in this effort, creating a training curriculum and a learning environment that thoroughly prepares you for the next level in your career. At the same time we are committed to helping you learn how to preserve a meaningful balance between work and home, a skill that will shape every part of your life.

I foresee tremendous growth and unlimited possibilities in internal medicine at Iowa and I urge you to consider joining us in Iowa City . In this remarkable and heterogeneous community you'll find the breadth, depth, and diversity of patients, faculty, staff, and facilities to make your education a success. Look over our website, visit Iowa City, and compare us with other programs. Don't hesitate to contact Dr. Vogelgesang or me if you have questions about Iowa City or about internal medicine at the University of Iowa.

F. Jeffrey Field, M.D.
Professor and Interim Head,
Department of Internal Medicine

Welcome from our Program Director

The University of Iowa is a nationally and internationally recognized medical center with a superb academic environment. Our patient population is drawn from a large geographic section of the upper Midwest that represents all socio-economic levels. A broad diagnostic diversity makes this patient base ideal for a strong clinical experience.

Our faculty is committed to your success. We provide a thorough and rigorous clinical training and at the same time offer a high degree of personal autonomy. We have struck a dynamic balance between resident supervision and independence in which we expect residents to provide responsible, effective patient care under clear but unobtrusive guidance. Without private patients or private attendings our residents are involved in all aspects of patient care.

U of I medicine residents rotate on designated teaching inpatient services and all participate in an ambulatory block rotation for the entire three years. Elective time is ample and 2nd and 3rd year residents receive one week of educational leave. Our program directors and advisors work closely with every resident to design schedules that meet each individual's career goals.

Over the years Iowa has acquired a solid reputation for superb patient care, resident achievement, and excellence in clinical training. We are proud of what we can offer you.

I hope you enjoy perusing our website. Don't hesitate to contact us with your questions and comments.
