RESIDENT CONFERENCE SERIESThe Resident Core Conference series is held Monday through Friday at both University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and the VAMC.  Conferences are aimed at enhancing medical knowledge as well as promoting the principles of life-long learning.

  • CASE PRESENTATIONS:  During this interactive conference a case is presented by the admitting resident. As the case unfolds, other residents comment on differential diagnosis, work-up, and management strategy. Discussions are geared to focus on patient evaluation and clinical reasoning skills. Cases may be from the inpatient wards, intensive care units and the ambulatory setting. The Chief Resident at each hospital facilitates the case presentations. Other attendees may include the program director or department chair as well as faculty selected for their expertise on the topic.
  • CORE TOPICS in INTERNAL MEDICINEThis lecture series at both hospitals is designed to address clinical topics relevant to the practice of general internal medicine and subspecialties.
  • INTERN CASE-BASED LEARNING:  This weekly, interactive conference is held the first 4 months of the year. The conference is designed to foster a strong foundation in general internal medicine by focusing on basic inpatient and outpatient topics in Internal Medicine. Coverage is provided so that all interns are able to attend the session which is facilitated by a Chief Resident.
  • JOURNAL CLUB:  Once each month residents scheduled at UIHC will meet for Journal Club. Articles are selected by a faculty in that subspecialty to ensure that quality is maintained. The purpose of Journal Club is to practice careful dissection/evaluation of the current literature. This is resident run/led to maximize this goal.

AMBULATORY BLOCK CONFERENCE:  Weekly small group learning sessions during the ambulatory block complement the residents’ practical experiences and comprise the Ambulatory Block curriculum.  Seminars are designed to enhance knowledge and skills in the principles of evidence-based medicine including literature searching, critical appraisal and evidence-based decision-making as well as in other selected core topics of primary care medicine.  In addition, residents have the opportunity to review and build communication and physical exam skills during these conferences.

BOARD REVIEW:  Residents meet with key faculty for an in-depth review of internal medicine topics with the goal of guiding study and maximizing preparation for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination.

INTERNAL MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS:  This traditional conference provides an opportunity for the entire department to come together for an academic discussion which may range from innovative developments to comprehensive updates on key topics in internal medicine.  In addition, time each month will be reserved for in depth reviews of patient cases chosen to facilitate identification of systems improvements as well as to address less than desirable patient outcomes.  Focus will be on case management, systematic problem-solving and prevention to promote understanding and learning.

SUBSPECIALTY CONFERENCES:  Each of the subspecialty units has regularly scheduled conferences. Residents taking subspecialty electives attend and may even be a presenter at one of these sessions. Subspecialty conferences are open to any other residents.
