University of Iowa Health Care THE U NIVERSITY OF IOWA
Internal Medicine and Psychiatry
Combined Residency Program

Application Process

ERAS

Applications are only accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and all positions are filled through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

For foreign medical graduates, an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification is required. Sponsorship of J-1 visas is preferred. However, in cases in which you have completed USMLE Step 3 prior to the match, H-1b visas may be considered. Your ERAS application must be accompanied by an ECFMG certificate. Clinical experience in a United States setting, in which you take responsibility for patients at a level equivalent to that of a 4th year medical student (subinternship), or as an intern, is highly recommended, so much so that this can essentially be considered a requirement, however, each application will be considered on its own merit.

We accept applications from September 1st through December 31st.

Interview process

Interviews are conducted on Mondays in November, December, and January; this season on November 10, 17, 24; December 1, 8, 15, 22; and January 5, 12, 26.

The interviews are completed in a single day. Candidates meet with faculty and residents from the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry. Applicants will have the opportunity to interact with the current combined residents and dually-trained faculty.
