About Iowa City

 

Iowa City is a charming Big 10 college town with approximately 60,000 residents and 30,000 students. It is located in the heart of the Midwest and is served by the Eastern Iowa Airport located 20 minutes north of Iowa City. The city is situated on the Iowa River and is within a half-day’s drive to Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Omaha and St. Louis.

In 1999, Iowa City was ranked #1 in the Editor & Publisher Market Guide ’s list of best metropolitan areas to live in the US !

Iowa City offers large-city amenities without the hassle of traffic and crowds. Hancher Auditorium is one of the top 10 university arts showplaces. Hancher hosted Joffrey Ballet, Cats, The King and I, Les Miserables, YoYo Ma, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Summertime brings the annual Iowa City Jazz Fest with such headliners as The Neville Brothers, T.S. Monk, Jr., Paquito D’Rivera and others. The Dox Big Band is comprised of College of Medicine faculty, students, and housestaff.

Iowa City offers numerous recreation areas for biking, off-road bicycling, running, boating, hockey, golf, fishing, cross country skiing, soccer, hunting, and sailing . There are hundreds of acres in Lake Macbride State Park and the Coralville Reservoir Recreation Area. Year ‘round ice-skating is available at a new indoor rink at Coral Ridge Mall. Downhill skiing is available in several locations within 90 minutes of Iowa City. In addition there are challenging, groomed cross-country trails available locally. Major League sports are also close by with the Chicago Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Minnesota Twins, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs, and MLS soccer teams. A wide variety of Big 10 men's and women's collegiate athletics are also available.

Iowa’s schools consistently rank highly in national standardized tests. Iowa City Community School District has two public high schools grades 9-12), each serving approximately 1500 students, and a smaller parochial school (K-12) serving 800 students. There are two public junior high schools (grades 7-8) and 17 elementary schools (K-6), in addition to smaller private schools. Year round recreational and competitive youth sports clubs and a variety of activities are available for kids of all ages.
