Planning for Infertility
Stem cell transplantation, in almost all cases, causes permanent infertility in both men and women. Most patients' fertility will have already been affected by chemotherapy and radiation they have received prior to being a stem cell transplant candidate. It is unlikely that sperm or embryo storage will be possible for most patients, but if you are interested, we encourage you to consult your physician or our transplant physicians about the feasibility of these procedures in your case. A small percentage of patients are successfully able to have sperm or embryos stored, but planning must begin now. The freezing and storage of an unfertilized egg is not yet a feasible option. Technology in this field is moving rapidly and, in consultation with experts in our medical center, we will try to provide you with the most recent information.
