Steps to Join the Iowa Marrow Donor Program

Thank you for your interest in joining the Iowa Marrow Donor Program registry.
Your generosity may give someone a second chance at life.

You must be in good health and between the ages of 18 and 60 to register as a marrow donor.

Follow these 8 simple steps through the decision and application process.  It will probably take you about 20 minutes to complete this process.

  1. Read the brochure: Everyday Heroes

  2. Use the Health Screening Worksheet

  3. Read "What You Should Know About Becoming a Marrow Donor" and decide whether you can be a marrow donor

  4. Read the "Consent for Participation" in the Iowa Marrow Donor Program carefully

  5. Decide whether you want to register as a marrow donor.  Remember:

    • If you are selected as a marrow donor, you must be prepared to donate to whomever you match

    • If you are selected as a marrow donor, we will ask you to travel to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City to donate your marrow. (Travel expenses will be paid).

  6. Fill in all the blanks on the "Consent for Participation", including the donor information and health screening. Keep a copy of the "Consent for Participation" for your records.

  7. Return only the completed, two-page "Consent for Participation" to the Iowa Marrow Donor Program:

    C332 General Hospital
    200 Hawkins Drive

  8. Wait to hear from us.  We'll review your forms. Within a few weeks, we will call to:

    • Review the program with you and ask you to verify your health status

    • Schedule you to have a small amount of blood drawn for tissue typing.
