11/28/2007 Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa has been awarded a three-year, $630,000 Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to help young UI investigators launch pilot projects in cancer research. The grant, which continues 30 consecutive years of the ACS Institutional Research Grant, will be effective Jan. 1. The UI has received more than In 2008, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center expects to award seven seed grants of up to $30,000 each to UI researchers, said George Weiner, M.D., the grant's principal investigator and director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. "With the help of ACS grants, UI researchers have been able to launch a wide variety of cancer-related studies in the past 30 years," he said. The funds help investigators obtain preliminary research results that, in turn, help them compete for national research grants in basic, clinical, or psychosocial and behavioral cancer research. Awards have been given to junior faculty and researchers in 39 departments from seven colleges on the UI campus, including dentistry, engineering, medicine, liberal arts and sciences, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. "The ACS support fills a critical need to get UI research ideas off the ground, and we are eager to help our outstanding young cancer researchers put the latest funding to work," added Weiner, who also is professor of internal medicine at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and holds the C.E. Block Chair of Cancer Research. "Beginning researchers like these often make major discoveries later on that will ultimately unlock the cancer mystery," said Gretchen Tegeler, American Cancer Society state vice president for Iowa. "The American Cancer Society has already funded 42 Nobel Prize winners; many began in similar circumstances as these University of Iowa researchers."
