10/16/2007 Currently serving as President Elect, Abboud will assume the Presidency at the meeting of American Clinical & Climatological Association (ACCA) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Abboud has previously served as President of four national organizations: The American Federation for Clinical Research, The Central Society for Clinical Research, The American Heart Association, and the Association of American Physicians. The ACCA is one of the oldest and most prestigious associations in academic medicine and research, having been organized in 1884 by a group of physicians and scientists who set about to improve medical education, research and practice in this country. Its initial concern was with tuberculosis and its treatment by residence in a suitable climate. Over its 123 years, the society has expanded its field of interest to multiple disciplines within the broad scope of medicine. Its membership comprises outstanding medical leaders among physicians engaged in academic pursuits, teaching, and clinical practice. With the rapid advances in medicine, the Association provides a forum for the presentation and critical discussion of discoveries in basic research applied to disease, in clinical research and in medicinal education. Of great importance is the feeling of warmth and friendship that characterizes the meeting of the organization and its spirit. The ACCA is one organization where spouses are expected to attend the meeting and join in conferences, presentations, and social events. This is unique among medical societies and distinguishes the American Clinical and Climatological Association. The members of ACCA are selected on the basis of leadership and excellence in their chosen field. Active membership is restricted to 175 physicians. Those who were elected from the University of Iowa include: François Abboud, Robert Clark, James A. Clifton, Gerald F. DiBona, John W. Eckstein, Donald Heistad, Allyn L. Mark, Jean E. Robillard, Richard Wenzel, and the late Drs. Lewis January and William B. Bean Dr. Bean, who was past chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Iowa (1948-1970) was president of the ACCA in 1967. Each of the 20 or so senior and eminent physicians and scientists elected each year to join the prestigious group present their work at the annual meeting. The meeting reinforces the strong commitment to the scientific approach to medicine, including the emphasis on general health and prevention. |
