UI Health Care To Present Free Educational Seminar On Osteoporosis

4/22/2004

A University of Iowa Health Care expert will discuss osteoporosis, known as the brittle bone disease, during a free educational public seminar from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 18 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center located at 1220 First Avenue in Coralville, Iowa.

Osteoporosis is called the "silent disease" because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People may not know that their bones have become porous (not as dense) until a sudden strain, bump or fall causes a fracture. While more than 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis, another 34 million have low bone mass, the harbinger of osteoporosis. Of the 10 million who have osteoporosis, eight million are women.

Janet Schlechte, M.D., a professor in the UI Department of Internal Medicine and an osteoporosis specialist, will present the latest information on the disorder, including:

  • Screening: Who needs a DEXA scan?
  • Prevention
  • The role of calcium and exercise
  • Treatment options
  • Bone markers
  • New drugs

Advance registration for this free community seminar is encouraged. For more information, or to register, call 319-384-8442 or 800-777-8442 or visit online at www.uihealthcare.com/classes.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you require an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please call Tom Walljasper, Community Relations, in advance at 319-384-7353.
