Department of Internal Medicine UI's Satish Rao Receives Clinician Award 4/14/2003 A University of Iowa Health Care physician has received an American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Distinguished Clinician Award. Satish Rao, M.D., Ph.D. , UI professor in the Division of Gastreonenterology-Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine, was selected for the award, which recognizes gastroenterologists who combine the art of medicine with the skills demanded by the scientific body of knowledge in service to their patients. One award is given to a member in private practice and one to a member in clinical academic practice. Rao was chosen for the clinical academic practice. Rao will receive his award at the AGA 2003 annual meeting that will be held in May in Orlando, Fla. Rao, who has served on the UI faculty since 1992, also is director of the UI Neurogastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Motility and Anorectal Manometry and Biofeedback Program. In addition, Rao leads an NIH-sponsored study on biofeedback and constipation, and he is a researcher with the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Many physicians sent in comments to nominate and support Rao for the award. One physician noted that he "has always demonstrated the highest professional level of excellence both in terms of clinical acumen and compassion for patients referred for management to the University of Iowa."
