Department of Internal Medicine UI Establishes Certificate Program in Clinical Research 1/22/2003 At its January meeting last week in Iowa City, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa approved the establishment of a new Certificate in Clinical Investigation program at the University of Iowa. The certificate will be offered to scholars participating in the Iowa Scholars in Clinical Investigation Program (ISCI). The program is funded by a Clinical Research Curriculum Award from the National Institutes of Health. Brad Doebbeling, M.D., M.Sc., is program director and Valerie Forman, Ph.D., is assistant program director. Both are faculty members in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Other faculty members in the program come from the UI Carver College of Medicine as well as the UI Colleges of Public Health, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Liberal Arts. The certificate program will directly target the training needs of the ISCI scholars by providing 19 hours of focused coursework in research methodology and data analysis. The program also sets research productivity goals for trainees, requires hands-on research experience with experienced clinical research mentors, and provides opportunities for trainees to receive interdisciplinary critique of their work. To be eligible for the new program, individuals must hold a M.D., Ph.D., D.O. (doctor of osteopathy), Pharm.D. (doctor of pharmacy) or D.D.S. (doctor of dental science) degree. One of the goals of the certificate program is to help make fellows and junior faculty more competitive for research careers in clinical research. |
