Department of Internal Medicine Researchers from UI Heart Care, Maharishi University, team up for study 8/2/2002 Researchers at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Maharishi University are conducting a joint study to test the potential of a holistic therapy for either slowing or reversing the progression of heart disease. Participants in the study have been diagnosed with coronary disease and have already completed outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. The people in the study are receiving treatment with several modalities of Maharishi Vedic Medicine (MVM), including techniques such as transcendental meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, herbal preparations and a special diet. Researchers examine the participants to help determine the possible effects of the regimen, checking blood pressure, cholesterol level, weight and mood. Ultrasound scans of the carotid artery in the neck are also conducted. The study's principal investigator is Brian Olshansky, M.D., UI professor of internal medicine and a physician with UI Heart Care. Olshansky also is a staff physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City. The project manager is Patti Lounsbury, advanced practice nurse with UI Heart Care. |
