Cardiology Fellow is a Table Tennis Whiz!
Cardiology fellow Rakesh Gopinathannair is a pretty good tennis player. He has won a few state-level tournaments over the past two years, including the most recent Iowa Games this summer (which is kind of the unofficial state championship) and a recent state-level tournament in Des Moines in October, 2008.
Rakesh has been playing table tennis since 12 years of age. He was the University champion and a top player for his state in India and used to regularly play in the inter-state and all-India inter-university tournament leagues until his final year of med school, when things became more challenging. He had taken a break from playing competitively for the past few years, until hI came to Iowa City in 2006 and found a club here. So far, Rakesh hasn't participated in any regional or national level tournaments (mainly due to time constraints) but if he were to do so, he would anticipate that his rating would be within in the top 200 or so players in the country. He does hope to compete at that level at some point.
