Eagles – Grand Aerie Board and Past Grand Worthy and Past Grand Madam Presidents Visit Iowa

Over 150 current, past and future leaders of the Fraternal Order of Eagles visited Iowa City April 16-19 and May 4-8.  The million-member Eagles organization has committed to a $25M fundraising campaign to create The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center. 

Eagle leaders enjoyed diabetes presentations, medical facility tours and information on the creation of the new diabetes research center to be housed in the Institute of Biomedical Discovery. The Eagles gift will fund endowed chairs and fellowships for diabetes researchers, provide seed grants for innovative research, and help recruit leading scientists in diabetes research and translational medicine.   

Dean Rothman along with Drs. Stokes, Sivitz, Anderson, Mohler  and Pediatrics faculty, Drs. The UI Foundation recently announced the promotion of Brenda Duello to Executive Director. Brenda’s area of responsibility has grown beyond the boundaries of Internal Medicine - a department with more faculty members than some colleges - to encompass The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, established by a $25 million gift commitment she worked to secure. In addition, she is now managing our development activities for the UI Heart & Vascular Center, previously staffed by Karla Kimerer. Brenda will soon start a search for an Assistant Director to work in tandem with her on these areas.

Work Progresses on the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research center.

Dr. John Stokes and Brenda Duello have met with state Eagle leaders in Ohio, Washington and Iowa and will be meeting with Eagle leaders in Pennsylvania and Virginia soon on this unique partnership to create The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research center.
