UI medical students receive residency assignments on 'Match Day'

Fourth-year students in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine today took part in "Match Day," the annual event where medical students nationwide learn where they will begin their medical residency training following graduation.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program will have 29 new interns for the 2009-2010 academic year. Nine of the incoming residents are members of the 2009 graduating class of the UI Carver College of Medicine.

This year's complete match results, including individual results by name, state and specialty, will be available online at http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/osac/MatchResults.html.

Ihab Hassan received a Certificate of Commendation 2008 Community Service Award from the Organization of Resident Representatives (from the AAMC).

Congratulations!

ACP Clinical Vignette Competition Results

On February 13th, the Residency Program held its annual ACP clinical vignette competition for residents and medical students. Fourteen residents and four medical students participated. All of the presentations were excellent again this year, making judging very difficult, however the judges chose these winners:

Students:
1st place: Anne T. Wilson – Anaphylactic Transfusion Reaction: A Rare Transfusion Complication

Residents:

1st place:
Oussama Lawand

Pancreatitis Polyarthritis Panniculitis

2nd place:
Shinkai Hakimi

Connecting the Dots … A Case of Palpable Purpura

The winners will be invited to present their cases at Grand Rounds (April 23 for the Medical Students and June 18 for the Residents), and Oussama and Shinkai will represent us by presenting their cases at the ACP Chapter Meeting (March 27-28).

Please congratulate all who participated and did an outstanding job. It’s clear that a lot of work went into the presentations (which were excellent) and reminded the judges that we see some very interesting cases at the University of Iowa!

- Scott Vogelgesang, M.D.
