Victor Receives Top American Heart Association Award

Dr. Ronald Victor (F '84), chief of hypertension at UT Southwestern, has received one of the top awards presented by the American Heart Association. Dr. Victor received the association’s Louis B. Russell Jr. Memorial Award for outstanding service to minority and underserved populations. In 2003, Dr. Victor initiated a program at two Dallas-area barbershops to improve the awareness, treatment and control of high blood pressure among African-American men by having the barbers measure their customers’ blood pressures when they came in for a haircut.

Dr. Wenzel on the Science Channel: Anatomy of a Pandemic

The International Society for Infectious Diseases is pleased to inform you of an exciting TV program featuring our immediate past president, Dr. Richard Wenzel. Dr. Wenzel recently traveled to Mexico City, on an invitation from the Ministry of Health, to provide expertise on the swine flu and participate in discussions regarding the H1N1 outbreak. A film crew accompanied Dr. Wenzel during his trip, documenting his experience with H1N1 patients at a local hospital and his visit to a local vaccine warehouse.

Overview of "Anatomy of a Pandemic"

It's a terrifying word. But what does it really mean? The outbreak of H1N1 is the latest deadly global battle between man and virus. As we learn more about how viruses mutate, an international effort is underway to vanquish humanity's most lethal foes.

The hour-long show, "Anatomy of a Pandemic", will air on The Science Channel during the following times:

• Alastair Haddow, ('77 R, '79 F, ID) recently joined St. John's Clinic-Infectious Disease in Springfield Mossouri. Dr. Haddow is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease and is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Society for Microbiology. • Brook Scott ('92 F, Cardiology), of Edmond, OK, was inducted into the Duncan (OK) high School Hall of Fame. He helped create the Oklahoma Foundation for Cardiovascular Research in 1995 and co-founded the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in 2002. A lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, he deployed to Tikrit, Irag, in April 2008 with the 325th Combat Support Hospital. (From Medicine, Fall 2008 issue - a CCOM publication).
