VA Medical Center: Clinical Services

8W Teaching Service.
The 8W teaching service cares for the entire spectrum of pulmonary and critical care medicine patients. This is an active patient care service that serves up to 80 patients per month. An attending physician with a full-time faculty appointment at the University of Iowa plays an active role in caring for the patients. The attending physician is assisted by medical students, interns and residents, and a pulmonary specialist in training.

Pulmonary Consult Service.
The consult service provides all of the inpatient pulmonary consultation and provides oversight of mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit. This service may have more than 100 patient visits per month.

Pulmonary Procedures Service.
The pulmonary procedures service performs bronchoscopy, pleural biopsies, and transbronchial needle aspirates, chest tube placement, and insertion of invasive monitoring devices such as arterial lines and Swan-Ganz catheters. This service also reads all pulmonary function tests.

Outpatient Pulmonary Clinic.
The outpatient pulmonary clinic meets every Wednesday and Friday. These are busy clinics that manage the entire spectrum of pulmonary disease. The Friday clinic has a special emphasis on lung cancer. Spirometry and blood gas analysis are available in the clinic. Complete pulmonary function testing is available by advance appointment.
