Outpatient Clinic

The outpatient visits to clinic fill each day at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). The diversity of the patient population and interests of the faculty has allowed for specific sub-specialization. Although general pulmonary medicine is practiced daily, on the following days specific diseases are the focus:

Monday: Multi-disciplinary approach to lung cancer
Tuesday: Interstitial lung diseases, steroid-dependent asthma (in cooperation with the Allergy/Immunology Division), and lung reduction
Wednesday: Occupational medicine
Thursday: Tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchiectasis
Friday: Smoking cessation and pulmonary rehabilitation
Monday through Friday: Evaluation of State workers compensation and health

Fellow associates in the 2nd and 3rd years of their training take responsibility for management of general and subspecialty pulmonary patients under the supervision of pulmonary faculty.

All of the specialized and general pulmonary clinics are closely integrated with other services within the UIHC so that patients can be scheduled easily on the day of their visit for specialized studies such as pulmonary function or exercise testing, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, high resolution CT scan of the chest. The numbers of patients seen in the UIHC pulmonary clinics continues to increase annually. Last year 2207 (1727 news + 480 consults) new patients and 6382 (4,232 returns + 2150 test only returns) return patients passed through the UIHC pulmonary and occupational medicine clinics.

Beyond the UIHC members of the pulmonary staff also manage general pulmonary problems two half days per week at the VA hospital in Iowa City and at various outreach clinics. The outreach clinics are located in Ottumwa (one day each week), Muscatine (two days each month), Keosaqua (one day each month), Manchester (one day each month), Vinton (one day each month), Mt. Pleasant (one day each month), and Fairfield (one day each month).
