Director, Gene Therapy Center for Cystic Fibrosis and Other Genetic Diseases and Director, Animal Models Core
Interim Head of Anatomy and Cell Biology
Research in Dr. Engelhardt's laboratory focuses on the development of gene therapies for inherited and environmentally induced diseases. Included in these areas of molecular medicine are four areas of research emphasis: 1) pathogenesis and treatment of cystic fibrosis lung disease, 2) mechanisms of submucosal gland development and the identification of stem cells in the airway, 3) redox-mediated mechanisms of ischemia/reperfusion injury in the liver and heart, and 4) biology of adeno-associated virus (AAV) transduction and development of this virus as a vector for gene therapy.
