Inpatient Services:
Veteran's Affairs Medical Center Hematology/Oncology Consultation Service

The Solid Tumor and Hematology-Hematologic Malignancy Consultation Services at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center are combined, and provide consultation on inpatients with problems in either area. The service includes a staff physician, a fellow associate who is undergoing specialized training in Hematology/Oncology, a Physician Assistant with extensive experience in cancer and blood diseases. A doctorate level clinical pharmacist with expertise in chemotherapy drugs provides close consultation in clinic, often with the participation of Pharm. D. students. The service works closely with three oncology-trained nurses in the clinic and chemotherapy suite, and others on inpatient services. A social worker with special interest in cancer patients provides skilled intervention. A nutritionist with interest in cancer patients is also available.

The service follows a substantial cohort of patients on General Medicine and other inpatient services with tumors of the lung, gastrointestinal tract, head and neck, pancreas, breast, kidney, and other solid organs, including sarcoma and cancers of unknown primary, leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and benign hematologic problems.
