Richard L. DeGowin, M.D.
Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine and Radiology

Dr. DeGowin's clinical interests include the care and study of patients with hematologic malignancies, anemial, hemopoietic insufficiency, myeloproliferative diseases, and problems with hemostasis. Laboratory investigation in the field of experimental hematology has involved studies of hemopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. He has studied the hemopoietic abnormalities to explain the hemopoietic insufficiency in patients with cancer and/or infection who receive radiation therapy of antineoplastic chemotherapeutic agents. He has found that either tumor-bearing or chronic inflammation profoundly impairs survival and suppresses hemopoitic recovery of mice after sublethal total-body irradiation. Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of recombinant erythropoietin administered to predialysis patients with chronic renal failure.
