I went to a most extraordinary Grand Rounds on May 3, 2012 at the University of Iowa. The presentation gave an excellent glimpse at how all of us- physicians and patients alike- will need to assist if we are to bend the cost curve.

Eunjin (Danielle) Chung, M.D., M.A.
Associate

Dr. Chung is a graduate of Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea where she received a bachelor of arts.  In 1998, she moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music where she earned a master’s degree in piano performance.   In 2000, she enrolled at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign for her pre-medical education.  She received her Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2008 and completed her residency at the University of Iowa.  Dr. Chung joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a non-teaching hospitalist in July 2011.

Outside of work, Dr. Chung spends as much time as possible with her two children (4 years  and 3 months).  She returns to the piano whenever she finds the time.

When asked about her passion for her work, Dr. Chung says “I work as a hospitalist because I like hospital medicine.  What we do in the hospital matters and makes differences in the patient and families’ lives.  Moreover, it is never boring because of the challenges it gives every moment I am at work."

ARTICLE: A Population Approach to Mitigating the Long-Term Health Effects of Combat Deployments
AUTHOR: Heather Schacht Reisinger, PhD, et. al.
JOURNAL: SPrev Chronic Dis 2012;9:110116.

A major focus of the mission of the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is to respond to the needs of military personnel returning from war. Given the broad spectrum of the potential effects of combat deployment on the health and well being of service members, VA is increasingly oriented toward comprehensive postcombat support, health promotion, disease prevention, and proactive approaches to caring for combat veterans. This article briefly summarizes the health care needs of service members returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, describes VA’s approaches to addressing their needs, and outlines VA’s evolving vision for how to apply principles of population health management to ensure prompt and effective response to the postdeployment needs of veterans returning from future conflicts. At the heart of postcombat care will be population-based approaches oriented to health recovery using interdisciplinary, team-based platforms.
