Steven Polyak, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Dr. Polyak's clinical interests focus on Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. His research interests include the study of gene transfer to the intestine, cell and organ specific targeting and the pathophysiology of chronic intestinal inflammation. His laboratory studies adeno-associated virus mediated intestinal transduction; the role of crypt progenitor and enteroendocrine cells in long-term intestinal transgene expression; the modulation of mucosal inflammation through immunoregulatory transgene expression in animal models of colitis; and the cytokine-chemokine signatures in acute and chronic colitis. Additionally, Dr. Polyak is active in translational and clinical research including projects in imaging intestinal inflammation and characterization of IBD phenotypes. He has participated in several national clinical trials devoted to improve treatment for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Polyak has also excelled as a clinician and educator in gastroenterology. He routinely mentors medical students, residents and fellows toward careers in academic medicine. He also supports patient education through participation in local patient support groups and organizations.
